Workshops
Mid-year Check-in – Tuesday, January 22nd, 6-8pm
This workshop will give parents a chance to take a deep breath in the middle of the year and look at how things are going, what could be going better, and how to go about making changes.
We’ll start by looking at what’s been working well, and what makes it work well. That will give us some insight into what may be missing in the areas that are not working so well. For example, if you’re having success with the way you’re approaching the teaching of writing, but you’re frustrated with how things are going with math, we’ll see what you can learn from the writing that can be applied to the math.
We’ll also take time to look at any other questions and challenges that have come up in the course of your teaching and learning with your child this year.
Helping with Writing – Thursday, January 31st, 6-8pm
Many parents I work with enjoy writing themselves, and would like to help their children learn to enjoy and excel at writing, but they’re not sure how to go about it, or find that they’re not sure how to help with their children’s particular areas of difficulty. In this workshop I’ll share the approaches that I’ve found work well with young writers. We’ll work on what it takes for kids to enjoy writing, even when they seem as though they just plain won’t, and then we’ll look at how to support them once they’re motivated to write but continue to struggle with mechanics (spelling, punctuation, sentence structure, etc.). The workshop will be tailored to the specific needs of the participants.
... And Then There’s Math! – Tuesday, February 12th, 6-8pm
Let’s face it – math education hasn’t always been optimal, and many adults are still intimidated by anything that looks like math. Even if you aren’t intimidated, it can be tricky to figure out how to help kids enjoy and understand it. This workshop is designed to help you help your kids with math even if you don’t like it or don’t understand some of it, and will also be tailored to the needs of the participants. It may involve some work with specific math concepts, but only if everyone’s up for it!
All workshops will be limited to 5 participants and will take place at 918 Brighton Avenue in Portland. The fee for each workshop is $40. To register, or to ask questions about any of the workshops, contact Meredith at 504-4157 or meredith@newseptembers.com.
